Interstate 70
The highest point on the national Interstate System is inside these tunnels. The rock is extremely bad for tunneling. It was a political decision to make the tunnels in time for what was going to be the 1972 Denver Winter Olympic Games. The first company went bank-ript and the second was about to when the State of Colorado stepped in and ordered work to continue on a cost-plus basis woth the State deciding which cost over-runs were allowed.
The Olympics were later cancelled. Without them you might still be trying to go over Loveland Pass in the winter.
Drainage water added to water from the west side of the divide flows East to Clear Creek and on to the giant Coors bfrewery in Golden for their beer.
