This supermarket opened approximately in the late 1970s as G&G Supermarket to replace the smaller store at 901 West College Avenue. Over the years it expanded to almost 100,000 square feet and was once the largest independent supermarket west of the Mississippi. In late 2016, the owners of the store retired and sold the store to Safeway, resulting in the store closing from November 2016 to December 2016 as it converted. Because of its legacy as a large independent store, it is now the largest Safeway store in the chain.
