Pyochung Pavilion was built to house two enormous stone steles, one erected in 1740 by King Yongjo and the other by King Kojong in 1872. Both commemorate the assasination of famed statesman and Confucian scholar, Jong Mong-ju, and praise his loyalty to the Koryo dynasty (ironically, the very dynasty that Joseon had overthrown).
