Pangangan was previously called by our old folks as “Pangawan”. From the word “panggaw” ("panggal" in Cebuano as Boholanos pronounce "l" as "w").
N.b. Panggaw is a kind of fish trap used by some fishers to catch fish. This method of fishing was very popular in this island since the old days.
The word “pangawan” was later corrupted to became “Pangangan” and until today it is the official name of this island.
Before, there was an old roman catholic church of Sta. Felomina which was built in 1905 before WWII, located near the western end of the island and its annual fiesta was celebrated then every 10th day of August. This is a very famous fiesta celebration in Bohol (hapit na malunod ang isla kay grabi kadaghang mga visita; vivo jud kaayo) and it makes us (Boholanos) very proud. Later in 1996, some of the people living in the other end of the island organized to build a new church and constructed it somewhere in the middle part of the island, as it exist today. It is named Our Lady of Fatima parish church, and they changed the day of celebration every 13th day of May since year 1998 to the present. This created chaos and confusion because most of the older people still celebrates their annual fiesta according to the old church, where their hearts and beliefs are still left in there. This leads into further confusion to visitors as the locals who wish not to celebrate makes this an excuse. Until now, people are not united in celebrating the festivities.
The causeway connecting the main land to Pangangan was completely constructed after WW II solely by locals without any engineering construction group. It is believed to be the longest causeway in the Philippines.
Fantastic!!!!!
