St. Goar (Sankt Goar am Rhein)

Germany / Rheinland-Pfalz / Sankt Goar / Sankt Goar am Rhein
church, Medieval / Middle Ages, interesting place

The Abbey of Prüm in St. Goar already had a church built in the 8th century which was subsequently dedicated to St. Goar of Acquitania. After the church had burned down, a new building was erected around 1089, the spacious crypt of which has been preserved. The rest of the building was altered repeatedly. From 1444 to 1469, the last Count of Katzenelnbogen had the nave transformed into a galleried hall with a nave and two aisles, a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture in the Middle Rhine region. The paintings on the southern aisle vaulting originated between 1469 and 1489.
