Built in order of Richard I of England (Lionheart) between 1197 and 1198.

On March 6, 1204, after seven months of blockade, Philip Augustus finally took it by storm.

Once Chateau Gaillard had surrendered, Philip Augustus was free to invade Normandy that soon became french.
