Construction began on this 480-foot radio tower in 1994. The location, adjacent to the main athletic field, was chosen as it presented the least impact to the neighboring area.

Construction was halted when the tower was more than halfway done, in part due to complaints from the neighboring New York Botanical Garden. The Garden argued that the tower would be an unsightly addition to the the Garden's skyline.

WFUV received temporary permission from the FCC in 1999 to broadcast their signal from the incomplete tower. Their original tower sat atop the clock tower of Keating Hall on campus; structural problems with Keating Hall forced the decision.

In 2006, WFUV's signal was broadcast from a new tower atop an apartment building owned by the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
