Melmerby Beach

Canada / Nova Scotia / New Glasgow /

A recreational and ecologically natural salt-water beach located in Pictou County overlooking the Northumberland Straight. Measuring 2km in length and situated on a gentle slope surrounded by dune grass, it is designated Class "A", with bright fine sand that is clean. The name "Melmerby" came from a ship which sank off the beach on October 12th, 1890 on route to Quebec City. Residents simply call it the "Merb."

The water is remarkably warm due to the shallowness from sand-bars that trap pools, particularly at low tide, and is quite safe for children under casual supervision. Jelly-fish are prevalent from time to time but not a danger for swimmers. Parking is plentiful however due to its pristine ecological nature, no commercial retail food outlets are available. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own.
