Fort McKinley was named February 12, 1902 in honor of William McKinley, twenty-fifth President of the United States, who died at Buffalo, New York on September 14, 1901.
Fort McKinley is of the same vintage as many turn-of-the-century Army posts across the country. Garrison buildings remaining here have duplicates at Fort Sheridan, IL, Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, Fort Leavenworth, MO, as well as Fort Preble, Fort Williams and Fort Levett in Casco Bay.
For example, the remaining fire house buildings at all four Portland Harbor posts are identical in every detail.
