One of Jamaica's oldest high schools. Founded 1789 as the Drax Free School in Saint Ann (parish) by Charles Drax, a planter. The buildings at Hope opened 9th July 1885 and the first classes here took place in September of the same year.
In September 1890 University College opened in connection with the school and in 1902 they amalgamated under the name Jamaica College
