buddhist temple, 10th century construction
(관음사/觀音寺)
North Korean National Treasure #125.
Founded in 970, Kwanum Temple was enlarged in 1393. Its main sight is the beautifully painted Taeung Hall, rebuilt in 1646. Behind the temple is a small cave in which sat an ancient statue of the goddess of Mercy, Kwanŭm (known in Chinese as Guanyin), for whom the temple is named. The current statue is a replica, however, as the original is in the Central History Museum (and was recently loaned to South Korea for a popular exhibiton.)
Location: Pakyon-ri, Kaesong.
