This place was once a huge water pond. The water pond was filled with sand and the same was converted into a stadium. Rain water arvesting was unheard of in those days. Hence, the water table had gone down since then in this area. Then actress Miss Jayalalitha, who went on to become Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu twice, gave a dance performance to rasie funds for constructing the stadium.
