Wakulla Springs is the world's largest fresh water spring. The water is crystal clear and can be used as tap water, although in recent years the water quality has degraded significantly due to exotic hydrilla infestation and high nitrate levels from growth to the north.
This is one of the sites for filming of the 1970s series "Flipper" though it is perhaps best known as the place for location filming during production of "Creature From the Black Lagoon".
There was a famous alligator "Old Joe" who lived near the springs until killed in the late 1960s. His stuffed hide is in the Lodge.
