railway, tunnel, abandoned / shut down
This was the site of one of the 8 railroad tunnels in Illinois. The rail line here was known as the
St. Louis & Cairo, and then the Mobile & Ohio, then the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, and finally the Illinois Central Gulf. ICG abandoned this line in 1980. The tunnel itself had the top removed over 100 years ago,
a process known as "daylighting". Only 4 of the 8 railroad tunnels in Illinois are still in use.
