Apollo Bunder was once a maze of docks and wharves. The name was derived from the native name 'Polle', from the native Konkani language, and corrupted by the English from the Portuguese Pollem to Apollo. Beginning in 1900, the British government began to reclaim this area in order to make build a welcoming arch to receive the King and Queen of England during their forthcoming visit. The Taj Mahal hotel occupies what was once a boat basin. The land is owned by the Bombay Port Trust which has leased it out to several occupants.
