Apollo Bunder was once a maze of docks and wharves. The name was derived from the native name 'Polle', from the native Konkani language, and corrupted by the English from the Portuguese Pollem to Apollo. Beginning in 1900, the British government began to reclaim this area in order to make build a welcoming arch to receive the King and Queen of England during their forthcoming visit. The Taj Mahal hotel occupies what was once a boat basin. The land is owned by the Bombay Port Trust which has leased it out to several occupants.

  • Dear Sir, I found an old account from Spencer & Co. Bombay in my Grandmother's books. Nellie Nixon was an artist and her address is Curzon House. She may have lived in that house 100 years ago. one of her painting is of a tiger hunt on the backs of elephants. I would love to get a photo of this painting. if you can send me an e-mail address I will attach a very old photo of the painting. Please can you assist me in finding this painting? Thank you, Vincent Nixon
