This fort was built under the Third System beginning in 1857 and ending in 1868.
As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with one-hundred six 32-pounder seacoast guns, thirty-seven 24-poundre guns, twelve field pieces, eight flank howitzers, one-hundred four 8" heavy seacoast howitzers, five 10" heavy mortars, five 10" light mortars, four 16" stone mortars and 10 coehorn mortars, for a total of 291 guns.
The fort was never completed. It was later dismantled and all that remains if the southwest bastion and a section of the west curtain.
