History : When King thirumalai nayak who ruled madurai in 16th century started renovating the Meenakshi Amman temple (destroyed by muslim reulers who ruled Madurai earlier ) , he required huge sand for the renovation work, to get that required sand he dug a huge tank which was later decorated with a central garden (Mayya mandapam)
