Wharton Studios-historical location (Ithaca, New York)

USA / New York / Cayuga Heights / Ithaca, New York
place with historical importance, film/video production studio/facility, historical layer / disappeared object

Early silent pioneers Theodore and Leopold Wharton established studios at Stewart Park on the south shore of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca about 1914. They took over Renwick Park, a defunct trolley museum complete with a complex of buildings.

Stars who worked for the Whartons included Oliver Hardy, Pearl White, Olive Thomas, Theda Bara,Francis X. Bushman, and Warner Oland.

The studio complex covered about 45 acres and included stages, outdoor sets, and costuming, props, editing, and production offices.

The Whartons declared bankruptcy in 1919 and made several attempts to resurrect their careers, but were never again successful.

The Grossman Picture Company leased the studio in 1919 for a one picture deal, subsequently occupied by Cayuga Pictures (1920-21). Site purchase by the City of Ithaca in 1921 for $10,000.
