This was the primary Locomotive construction and maintenance facility on the Lehigh Valley Railroad from 1876 through 1976 and at its height employed thousands of people from the City of Sayre and the surrounding area in all manners of trades supporting LVRRs freight and passenger operations. Once LVRR reached its maximum size in 1892, Sayre sat almost dead-center in the 1,362mi route network and the yard was greatly expanded to support the large number of steam engines, passenger railcars and freight cars running on LVRR tracks. Reaching peak size with the completion of the massive locomotive shop, the yard comprised 25 workshop buildings, a 46 stall roundhouse and included a dedicated powerplant which also provided electric power to the City of Sayre.

After the LVRR went bankrupt and eventually was absorbed by Conrail in 1976 the majority of the yard buildings were abandoned and torn down, with the locomotive shop being the last major piece of the former yard demolished in 1988. Several of the passenger car shops as well as the hammer and blacksmith shops were reused as the yard became devoted to railcar storage and maintenance under Conrail and later Norfolk Southern.
