This was a major transfer point on the old "Bridge Line" to New England which was named after the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad's High Bridge in Poughkeepsie which provided the southernmost rail link to the New England region.

The collapse of manufacturing in that region eventually spelled the demise of the Bridge Line and many of the short regional railroads that depended on it including the Lehigh and New England, Lehigh and Hudson River, New York Ontario and Western and the New Haven Railroad itself.

The decline was hastened by a fire on the double-track Poughkeepsie bridge in 1974 which rendered it unsafe for rail traffic. Penn Central, into which the New haven had been merged, decided not to spend the money to repair the bridge, because the Penn Central already had other routes into New England on which it did not have to share revenue with other carriers.
