Kaiser ran their coke calciner here to convert coke into pure carbon used in the "pre-bake" anodes. These anodes were referred to as "carbon", and "carbon-setters" would change these out of the pot-cells. Carbon-setting was considered to be one of the worst jobs due to the exposure to the heat.
