The Jonquiere Works consists of two operations. The Vaudreuil plant converts bauxite ore to alumina, which is then converted to aluminum metal in four nearby smelters--Alma, Arvida, Laterriere and Grande-Baie.
The Arvida smelter on this site opened in 1926. Part of the operation was closed in 2004, as its old Soderberg technology is obsolete, expensive, and creates high levels of pollution. The newer technology "pre-bake" potlines continue to produce 161,000 tonnes per year of aluminum.
