Dohuk Governorate (Kurdish: Parêzgeha Dihokê - پارێزگای دھۆک, Arabic: محافظة دهوك) (or Dohuk Province) is a governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan, Iraq. Its capital is the city of Dohuk. It also includes the city of Zakho, which has at various times served as a checkpoint for the border with Turkey. Prior to 1976 it was part of Nineveh Governorate, which was called Mosul Governorate. The province has a population of more than 1,3 million. Dohuk Governorate is mainly inhabited by Kurds and Assyrians. After the 1991 Kurdish revolt, the districts of Aqrah, Badarsh an Al Shikhan were incorporated to Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in the Duhok Governorate, and are in direct control of KRG.
The borders of Duhok province are natural. To the west, it makes border with Ninawa governorate, in the Mosul lake and Tigris River. To the North, the border with Turkey's Sirnak and Hakkari provinces is the Hezil River up until the Silopi Dam, and the (?)mountains. To the East, the Shamdinan(?) and the Great Zab River makes border with Erbil Governorate. The borders follows the Zab until Kalak city. To the South, the boder with Ninawa Governorate and the Assyrian Plains is the Nahr ak Khazir and Gomel Su Rivers, and the mountain range north of Ain Sifni and Alqosh, following the course of the (?) river down to the Mosul Lake.
