The LNG storage facilities liquefy natural gas by cooling it to -160 degrees centigrade and store it in liquid form. They are situated in strategic locations close to areas of high demand or at the extremities of the network. Their key feature is their location and their ability to rapidly revaporise the natural gas, and deliver it to the National Transmission System (NTS). As a result, LNG storage is able to provide a peak gas supply to shippers and supplement NGG's network capacity. In addition, LNG Storage is used as a contingency against the risk of emergencies such as system constraints, failures in supply or failures in end user interruption.

  • Baverstocks - big gas canister - when it blows up it'll take Merthyr and Aberdare with it.
  • Be nice to see the facilty taken down. The tank is a eye sore and people worry about it blowing up. Why is it still there?? The site could be a lovely caravan park. Being in the national park. Who owns the site anyone know.
  • National Grid own it. It hasn't been used since 2008 when the gas terminals at Milford Haven opened. National Grid tried to sell it but gave up in the end. I believe the last remaining tank was finally demolished just before midday on 26th October 2016. It was quite a loud blast heard throughout Merthyr Tydfil and the Cynon Valley.
  • All very silly. The tank was built in 1979 by Christiani & Nielsen which company also built many of the bridges on the A356 Heads of the Valleys road and the similar storage tanks at Avonmouth. The UK can only store a few gays of gas demand and it was therefore supremely silly to demolish useful capacity. As for blowing up, the tank was very strong with the gas containment being made of steel and surrounded by a concrete wall reinforced with spirally wound post tensioning wires
