Despite its name - this is a fairly unremarkable station on the North Clyde Line between Helensburgh and Airdrie. It used to be a lot more important before the Beeching cuts, when it used to serve a diverging line to Bridgeton (the current Argyle Line) - this line is now disused, but still can be seen.

Over the years though, it has been at the centre of various grand schemes to expand Glasgow's suburban railway lines, but none has ever made it off the drawing board, or past the Treasury's bean counters. The most infamous is Glasgow Crossrail - which involves re-opening the old City Union branch, which means High Street would need to be rebuilt completely to accommodate a new chord. With the North Clyde Line now extended to Edinburgh via the Airdrie-Bathgate extension, things are looking rosier. High Street might now get the big revamp its been waiting for now that Glasgow Collegelands is going up next door.

With the current obsession with building a High Speed railway network in Britain, Glasgow council chiefs have touted a grand regeneration scheme for the station if High Speed 2 ever manages to get north of the border (currently it is only going to go as far as Manchester), which would see it become a third major terminus for the city.
