Ranya (رانیه; Ra:nya) is a city located in South Kurdistan, 130 kilometres (81 mi) northwest of Sulaymaniyah. The population of this city was involved in the revolutionary movement of Kurdish people from the war against the British Empire. The city has a population of more than 200.000 people.
Ranya is ringed by Kewa Rash, which means Black Mountain in Kurdish. The town contains many popular tourist areas, including Darband, Daristan-i-Ranya, and Ganaw, as well as the villages of Dill-I Shawry, Akoyan, Betwata, Sar-u-Chawa and Zew-I Xoshnawati. These locations all provide stunning views of the local scenery. Known for its produce and agricultural expertise, the areas surrounding the town are extremely fertile. The people of Ranya participated in a number of revolutions against tyrannical Iraqi regimes, most famously in May 1991. The Ranya uprising achieved a great victory for the Kurdish people and many refer to the town as Darwaza-I Raparin, the Gate of the Uprising.
Ranya is surrounded by three mountain ranges, the Kewarash, the Hajila and the Asos. Lake Dukan, created by the construction of a hydro-electric dam, is near the town. Ranya neighbourhoods include Qelat, Reşemêrg, Gilîincan, Sera, Rizgarî, Raperîn, Andazyaran, Azadî 1, Azadî 2, Kêwereş, Qule،Mamostayan, Nawroz, and Fermanberan.
In the middle of seventeenth century, Ranya was under the control of Baban Empire. Later on, it was ruled under the control of Mir Muhammad Rwanduzi. And then, the ottomans overtook it.
Within establishing Iraq, Ranya was a district under Hawler province. In 1957, it is moved to the province of Sulaimani. In the center of Ranya, there is a square to the east which is called Qalat. The Qalat is the oldest square of the city, and it is counted as the base part of the city. The history of life in that square goes back to thousands of years.
Beside Qelat, the city of Ranya also has another hill which is called Girde Dêma. Also, there are many other historical remains in that district like Shimshara, which is investigated in 1957 - 1959 by a Danish archaeological team with the cooperation of an Iraqi team. It is counted as one of the oldest hills in the history of the human beings. More than 247 ancient remains have been found in that hill with a temple. Besides, there are many other hills in the place like Bazmusian, Boskin, Dwgradan, Kamarian, Qurashina, and Dema. And, there are a lot of other remains like rock carvings that are located in the right part of Darband to the east of Ranya. That carving is a structure of a man, which is thought to be a king of Gutians/Guti or Lullubi.
