Ironton is the county seat of Lawrence County, Ohio.

The town was founded by a pig iron manufacturer in 1849, when iron smelting was a major industry in southeastern Ohio. The iron industry went into decline in the final years of the 19th century, and the town saw additional hardships during two major floods in 1917 and 1937.

Ironton was also known as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
