Lawrence County is Ohio's southernmost county. It was named for James Lawrence, who commanded a US naval vessel during the War of 1812. The county was established in 1816.

Lawrence County's seat is Irontown, and one of the early industries in the region was the production of pig iron.

The southern edge of Lawrence County lies along the Ohio River, and it shares a border with West Virginia and Kentucky.
