Fayette County was established in 1810. It was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, who fought on the colonial side during the American Revolutionary War.

Its county seat is Washington Court House (formerly, Washington), and it is part of Ohio's 7th Congressional District.

The county is rural and mainly consists of flat to gently rolling farmland. The following towns are located in Fayette County:
