Originally, these old Southern Pacific rail lines terminated one block further to the northeast at a grand station at 3rd St. It was demolished in the 1970s to make room for a freeway ramp that was never built. The tracks were cut back to King, where a much more modest station was built.

The station was signifigantly modernized in 1998 by Nibbi Brothers contractors and VBN architects.
