This was once the site of a tuberculosis sanitarium, which operated between 1926 and 1972. It is now a part of the 293-acre Pulgas Ridge preserve. The sanitarium was purchased by the MROSD in 1983. Two years later all the hospital buildings were torn down and the site is now being reclaimed by nature.

  • It was called the Hassler Health Home and was operated by the San Francisco Dept of Public Health. The building sites along the road to the left of the currently outlined area.
  • building sites extended along the road, that is.
  • I can verify the Hassler Health Home designation since my dad's aunt, back in the 1960's, was confined there for many years after suffering a stroke. Many of the patients there were elderly.
  • My father worked at Hassler for a year or two and I have fond memories of a christmas dinner ~1955 complete with ham grown and cured at the site.
  • My grandmother lived and worked there into the late 50s. There were separate men's and women's wings for those who worked at Hassler and she had a nice room on the first floor. When I was growing up I was able to stay with her for visits a few times in a nearby room that was unoccupied, perhaps for visitors like me.
  • I lived at Hassler from 1950 through 1952. It was a beautiful facility for TB patients... big decks off the wards,Spanish tiled roofs, mild weather… It's a shame they tore it down could have been used again.
  • My second cousin died there in 1946 of TB after a 3-month stay. It was a bit of a mystery, but I was able to get a copy of his death certificate from the county recorder's office.
  • No disrespect meant to the patients and staff, but after it closed this location was a big attraction to the high school crowd who went there to party. It all ended in the early 80's when some idiot kid called into a local radio program on a Friday and announced a big party was to be held there that night. Many kids showed up, as did many police officers who were tipped off by the radio announcement.
  • Trying to find out more about this place, as I'm reading the book, "The Boy Next Door" about the Jon Dunkle murders. He used to hang out there. People used to joke it was haunted, when I was in high school. They called it "The Pinks." I guess that was the color.
