Iron Mountain Ski Resort (Abandoned)

USA / California / Kirkwood /
abandoned / shut down, ski resort / area

Iron Mountain Ski Area was an ski area with basic facilities; parking lot, lifts, cleared runs, lodge and over-night facilities. The base area is privately owned. The ski area is located on Highway 88, the same road leading to Kirkwood Ski Resort. There are 1,699 acres of National Forests System lands within the Iron Mountain Ski Area. The Iron Mountain Ski Area was established in 1970 as the Silver Basin Ski Area and operated under special use authorization. Since the ski area was originally authorized, it has operated 14 of the last 28 seasons, with closures due to a history of bankruptcies. In late 1998 Iron Mountain Acquisition Company, Inc, (IMAC) sold Iron Mountain Ski Area to Sierra Acquisition Co., Inc., and the permit to IMAC was terminated. Sierra Acquisition Co., Inc., did not submit a viable proposal for a special use authorization to operate the ski area and filed for bankruptcy in 1999. La Montana, Inc. purchased Iron Mountain Ski Area and has expressed interest in operating the ski area. The Forest Supervisor did not consider a proposal from La Montana, Inc., to operate a ski area at the Iron Mountain site because the Forest was assessing the proposed action to amend the Eldorado National Forest Plan to use the site to the best public benefit, make the site available for use to a variety of forest visitors and activities, and to minimize the cost incurred by the Forest Service.

Iron Mountain Ski Area has not operated since 1995.
