Begumpet airport at Hyderabad, was the only International Airport in Andhra Pradesh.

Begumpet airport provided two Check-in sections Rajiv Gandhi International and NTR National with a common arrival module. The airport handled both international and domestic traffic for Hyderabad. It was once the largest hub of Air Sahara with 126 flights.


The airport is closed for commercial flight operations from March 2008 and is replaced by Rajiv Gandhi International Airport located at Shamshabad, in the suburbs of the city. As this new airport became operational, Begumpet, which is located at the heart of the Hyderabad metropolitan area, is been used for aviation training, for commercial flights and for flights carrying VIPs.

Begumpet airport was established in the 1930s with formation of Hyderabad Aero Club. Initially it was used by Nizam of Hyderabad. The terminal building was constructed in 1937.

  • i think shamshabad airport could cause uncomfort for the people as their is no proper transport to get there.begumpet was fine and deserves to be the international airport.
  • its not abandoned, still in use for training runway laid and hangers built recently, doesn't look there is plan to abandon this airport

  • its used as airport for ministers(CM, etc), vips for flying. How will they know the pain common man undergo's travelling to far off distance spending 1000s of rupees for taxis, unless they also use new airport.
  • Govt did the Big mistake to change the Airport from Begumpet to Shamshabad. This Airport very convenient to people to travel.
