monument, battlefield, American Revolutionary War 1775-1783
A key battle in American independence, the "Battle of the Hook" cut off Cornwallis's supplies and his escape route, forcing his surrender on October 19, 1781. An hour after the surrender at Yorktown, the British and Hessian forces in Gloucester surrendered, marking the final significant battle of the American War of Independence.
The Hook battlefield is now an empty field behind the Hardee's at Hayes, hallowed ground with nothing to note its significance except a small roadside marker and a small, deteriorating concrete monument.
