Leake Mounds

This area was an extremely important Swift Creek Culture site. Dating to the Middle Woodland period (300 BC - 650 AD), the site is much older than the neighboring Etowah mounds, about 2 miles to the East. Sadly, the vast majority of the site was completely razed in the 40's to make way for US HWY 113, but excavations preceding it were thorough, at least.
