Fort Warren defended the harbor at Boston, Massachusetts, for over 100 years. It served as a prisoner-of-war camp during the American Civil War.

The fort was originally built in 1807 under the Second System as a star shaped masonry work mounting twelve guns. This fort was re-built as part of the Third System of fortifications beginning in 1833.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with sixty-two 42-pounder seacoast guns, one hundred thirty-seven 32-pounder seacoast guns, fifty-eight 24-pounder guns, twenty-three flank howitzers, thirty 8" heavy seacoast howizters, eight 13" mortars and sixteen 10" heavy mortars, for a total of 334 guns.
