Fort Mifflin

Mud Island Fort (Fort Mifflin) was the site of the largest bombardment of the Revolutionary War. The fort originally sat on an island in the river.

The current fort is a Second-System coastal fortification which was modernized under the Third-System beginning in 1836.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with nine 32-pounder seacoast guns, twenty-eight 24-pounder guns, four 18-pounder guns, eight 8" heavy seacoast howizters and four 10" heavy mortars, for a total of 53 guns.

The fort was utilized in one way or another during every major military action from 1777 until 1954.

During the Civil War the Union used Fort Mifflin to house Confederate prisoners of war, as well as Union soldiers and civilian prisoners.
