Chettikulangara High School and Teacher Training Institute were founded by the late Sri.A.N.P.Nair, under whose inspiring management the schools achieved all round developments. The High School was originally a Malayalam High School started in 1932,which attracted students from the neighbouring taluks too ,because the other Malayalam High Schools of the period were situated at places as distant as Kollam and Thiruvalla. Consequent on the new policy of the Government, the Malayalam High School was converted into an English High School in 1948.Mr.A.N.P.Nair was shrewd enough to realise the educational backwardness of Onattukara in general and he ventured to start an English Medium School at Kayamkulam and another at Thazhava, a village near Karunnagappally.
It was in1937 that a Higher Grade Training School was started at Chetikulangara .In those days, one had to go as far away as Kottarakara or Changanassery to undergo higher grade training. Of course , there was a Government Training School at Mavelikara but it was only a lower grade one.
In addition to the High School and the Teacher Training Institute, we have an aided L.P.S and an English Medium Nursery and L.P.S (unaided) under the same management.
The schools have a glorious past with regard to cultural activities. An educational journal called “Vidyalaya Poshini” was published by Sri A.N.P.Nair ,with Sri Kainikkara Kumara Pillai, the renowned educationalist as its Chief Editor and Mr Nair himself as the Managing Editor .Under the leadership of the late Sri Akbar Sankara Pillai ,the noted stage artist and Drawing Master of the school ,dramatic performances of high standard were presented by our students and teachers during school anniversaries . Amateur troupes including veteran actors like Sri Kainikkara Kumara Pillai ,Sri Anarkali Vasudevan,Sri E .V.Krishnapillai were invited to present well known plays .Katakali performances ,Ottamthullal , music recilats, literary discussions etc enlivened the campus .Even in recent times our teachers and students have maintained a high standard in cultural activities.
Our students have won overall trophy many a time at the District level youth festivals. At the State level youth festivals they have won first or second prizes in items like Kathakali music,Light music,Oppana,Parichamuttu,Ottamthullal and Drawing. They won the second prize in the Southern India Science Fair held in Bangalore in 1981 and a Merit Certificate in the Science Fair held in Madras in 1983.They participated in the National Science Fair held both in 1972 and 1978.Our N.C.C cadet Revi has represented the state in the Republic parade in Delhi. Our school was the venue for the District level youth festival of 1975.We could also conduct the District level sports meet. We organised a District level Science Exhibition in 1972.Though it was planned as a three day affair, it had to be extended for seven days,in response to enthusiastic public appeal. We stood first in Alleppey Revenue District in operating the Sanchayika Scheme introduced in schools 1975.
Our school is situated in a village, a backward area. We are proud of our student who could win the sixteenth state rank in the SSLC Exam of 2002.We are equally proud of the teacher trainee who could secure the First Rank in the TTI exam.`
Our teachers have proved their merit by winning State Award and National Award. Sri C. Chandrasekharan Pillai, who worked as the High School headmaster for a period of 25 years won both the State Award and the National Award (in 1980 &1984 respectively). He worked also as the Manager of the schools for a few years. He was also the President of the Chettikulangara Grama Panchayath for more than 8 years since then.Sri.R.Devedasan Thampy who was the headmaster of the TTI for a long period and Sri.G.Omanakuttam Pillai, the drawing master, won the State Award in 1984 and 1992 respectively.
In December 1981 we celebrated the Golden Jubilee of our schools on a grand scale. The open air theatre in which we are holding this function is a product of those celebrations.
