Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field ("The Swamp") (Gainesville, Florida) | sports venue, american football stadium

USA / Florida / Gainesville / Gainesville, Florida
 sports venue, american football stadium

The home stadium for the University of Florida's football team. It was formerly known as "Florida Field" (the turf retains that name), and affectionately known as the "The Swamp", since alligators can be found in swampland. It was first constructed in 1930, and has undergone several modifications to increase seating capacity, now at approximately 90,000. It also hosts local high school football championships in December, when the stadium is typically not in use.

Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. was a former student at UF, farmer, politician, and benefactor to the University of Florida, and the stadium was renamed in honor of his death in 1990. When the stadium is not in use, the grandstands, walkways, and field are open to daytime use by students for studying, reading, chatting, or just as a shortcut to get to class.
