Cathedral of the Assumption, commissioned by Metropolitan Paul II in 1667 and completed in 1685. Sometimes called the "little Assumption Church" its name serves to underscore its relationship to the Cathedral of Assumption within the Kremlin walls and the special role of the Krutitsy bishops. The white stone base and cellars date to the earlier Church of the Assumption 1516 and the Baroque-style building was constructed entirely of brick, including a domical vault, five onion domes and tent-roofed bell tower. The lower or warm church is consecrated in the name of Saints Peter and Paul, while the unheated or summer church, which sits above, celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin.
