From the entrance plaque: "FORT INDEPENDENCE PARK, "KINGS" BRIDGE, AND THE HEIGHTS ADJACENT, of the utmost importance to the communication between New York and main land, to security of the Hudson, were reconnoitered by Washington on horse back about June 16, 1776. By direction of the Commander in Chief, breast works were thrown up for defence of the bridge, and an advanced work (subsequently called Fort Independence) was building beyond it on the hill near this spot commanding Spuyten Deivel Creek."

A great spot to take a break, this park provides benches under magnificent rows of mature oaks, handball courts, a children's playground with fountain, and dog run. A knoll with rock outcropping may be the historical spot of the 'fort'. A bench on a second rock outcropping in the dog run area gives a view of the reservoir waters.
