Potential Danger - toxic gases from Garbage incineration

Most of the wastes are moved from Karur city to this place which includes municipal waste, household rubbish and medical wastes. Since they have pathogenic microorganisms and toxic substances, there is a potential danger to the nearby place ‘Arasu Colony’. There are thousands of poor people living and running their life with daily wages. Definitely they can’t afford any huge medical expenses.

The garbage is burned openly almost daily, the toxic gases released from hydrocarbon and metals contaminated materials are highly toxic and cause dangerous illness such as Asthma, Cancer, etc.

Since the site is not protected from the public access, there are few families living there to scavenge the waste materials to run their family. Obviously they will be exposed to these toxic materials. Some of the materials in the waste would cause the potential hereditary disease that means slowly they are passing the illness to the next generation.

Some of these materials will contaminate ground water!!! That is our drinking water resource.

Who will take responsibility????

Obviously the educated decision makers such as District Collector!!!

Solution:

1. Move the dangerous substances from the site (very near to ‘Arasu Colony’) to some of the dry lands in Dindigul road or Coimbatore / Erode roads.

2. Karur Municipal Cleaners should be educated about the importance of public health and how to dispose the wastes properly without harm to local community.

3. People living in the area should get compensation from the government for any clinical illness.

4. Educational Institutions in Karur/ Trichy district should use the site and Arasu Colony community as research / survey site to explore the hidden truth.

5. Arasu Colony people should also be educated about the danger of the materials and not to access the garbage site to scavenge the wastes.

Poor people are already struggling to run their daily life, because of inflation and high living cost. At least, we should protect them from harmful disease!! Definitely they can not afford it. Ultimately more and more pain for just to ‘SURVIVE’ in this world.

  • Thanks. In the map, it looks cloudy in that area. Is it cloud for rain or the toxic gases from the site as you mentioned? If the answer is the first one, that is good for farmers. Second one means 'ALARM FOR A DEATH SIGNAL'.
  • We still don't know why this place has been chosen for this garbage incineration's ... it will cause so much ill effects to people those who around this site... What can the do to avoid those effects...????
