It is a small town on the island of Samos and the seat of the municipality of Pythagoreio. It is believed to be the ancient capital of the island of Samos and the oldest man-made port in the Mediterranean Sea. Pythagoreio was named after the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras, who was born on the island. The town, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, because of the Greek and Roman monuments and the Tunnel of Eupalinos.
