This a pre-historic river ghat. According to Manasa Purana, Behula - the youngest daughter-in-law of Chandradhar Sadagar met here with Netai Dhubani, the washer woman of the Devatas (Hindu Gods) and requested her to take her to the Gods with a prayer of resurrection of her dead husband (Lakhindar - son of Chandradhar Sadagar who died of snake bite). Name of the town came from the name of the washer woman "Dhubani" (Washer Woman = Dhubani, in Assamese and Bengali.) This was the ghat (river side) where Netai Dhubani used to wash the clothing of Hindu Gods.
