  • The word 'Dhuburi' comes from a legendary lady called 'Netai-Dhubuni'. The story is connected with Behula-Lakhindar. The word Dhubuni is corrupted to 'Dhuburi'. According to Bodo-Kacharis the word is of Bodo origin and corrupted form 'Dubra' a kind of grass >Dubri>Dhubri>soft form -Dhuburi. But most of the scholars give imporatnce to the story of lady Netai-Dhubuni. Dhuburi is a western most district of Assam with its headquarters. It was a part of ancient Dharmaranya, Kusharanya, Koshakaranbhumi, Pagar-jo-tic, Lauhityadesha, Pragjyotisha, Kamarupa, Rumi, Kangoor, Bhadrapitha, Ratnapitha, Para-Lauhitya, Lohiccha, Giribraja, Kiratadesha etc. Sages like -Kanva, Orbya, Vasistha, Atri, Sravana, Parsurama crossed this area in a fairly early times. North Indian kings Amrutaraja, Raghu, Chamuda, Kaudinya, Ashoka passed through this land at a early times. Mahabharata famous Pandu, Lord Krishna, Duryyodhana, Jarashandha, Bhima, Arjuna etc also passed through this area. Most of the early rulers of ancient Assam controlled this region such as Danava, Ashura, Sudra, Varmana, Salstambha, Jitari, Pala, Bhuyans, Koch, Tai-Ahom etc. A portion of Buddhist 'Charyyapada' in old Assamese was written here by the Buddhist Priests sometimes in last part of A.D. 7 century and beginning of A.D. 8th century. Dhuburi was under the Bengal kings particularly under the Palas as well as Mughal Nababs for quite some times. The famous Nava-Vaisnava Guru Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhabdeva also touched Dhuburi area during their religious preaching tours. The principal Sikh Guru Nanak (who visited Kamakhya temple and Brahmakunda in A.D. 16th century), Guru Govinda Singh also had their encampments here. So we find Sikh 'Damdama' here. In addition, the Sikh-Islamic 'Panch-Peers' i.e., five religious preachers also visited this land during the the graet Mughal Invasion to this land. Dhuburi, was a Ahom-Mughal-Koch and Britisher's Fort for sufficient period. This is mentioned in Mughal Nabab Mirza Nathan's Baharistan-i-Ghaibi on number of times.
  • the name of the town is Dhubri and not Dhuburi. more-ver the text seems to have some confusing informations. correctons is reqired.
  • Now Dhubri falls very near to India- bangladesh border and therefore not a transit point for great many kings/ sages as enlightrned by Shri Sarat K Phukan. It was a good river harbour during British time when India was undivided one. There is Goddess BagreshwariTemple at Bagribari near Dhubri. While Dhubri is on North Bank of Brahmaputra river, Fakirganj/ Phulbari (both in Mehghalay state )and South Solmara (Assam) are on the South bank. It is exhilarating to travel fro Dhubri by motorised country boats to reach south bank. Much of South Salmara Circle Town was eroded by mighty Brahmaputra flood waters in 1990's. Many good school/ office structures of British time were taken aay by the river floods.
