Founded as a Citrus Experiment Station (1907) associated with the original University of California campus (now UC Berkley) became a campus of the University of California in the late 1950's. Originally envisioned as a small liberal arts campus of the University, it now has grown to a full-fledged research university, and is the fastest-growing of the UC campuses.
