Thieves' Tower, one of three fully preserved turrets on the Wawel Hill, is located in the western part of the hill.
It was built in the fourteenth century in the Gothic Line defensive wall. In the XVI century, this fortification tower was destroyed by fire and renewed several times. In the mid-nineteenth century, it was rebuilt by the Austrians, like the rest of the tower of Wawel. Between 1950 - 1951 it was restored to its state of the eighteenth century, according to the project developed under the guidance of prof. Vytautas Minkiewicz.
In the underground part of the tower has been preserved to this day the old dungeon prison.
