Since 1943, the Defense Fuel Support Point (DFSP) has been used to receive, store and distribute diesel and jet fuels for military use in California, Arizona and Nevada. In 1980, the Defense Fuel Supply Center branch of the Defense Logistics Agency assumed operations from the Navy. The DFSP currently utilizes 41 tanks to store various fuels and waste oil. Thirty-four of these storage tanks are underground and seven are aboveground. All the tanks and their piping are regularly inspected. The DFSP is located west of Long Beach and covers 331 acres.

DFSP’s primary mission consists of three main elements: operations, remediation and emergency response. This installation receives, stores and distributes petroleum products (JP5 and JP8 jet fuels) for military use in California, Arizona and Nevada. Fuels are delivered to FSP via tanker, barge, pipeline, U.S. Navy ships or tank trucks. Serving as a major fuel storage facility, DFSP possesses the capacity to store approximately 1.5 million barrels of petroleum products. These products are currently kept in 27 underground storage tanks. Three aboveground storage tanks were once used by the U.S. Airforce to store jet fuel, but are currently out of service. It is estimated that twelve million barrels of product are moved through DFSP each 12-month period.

DFSP’s mission involves truck and pipeline transport of fuel to U.S. military units. Two government-owned 18-inch fuel pipelines traverse the property to convey jet fuels. This pipeline distribution system connects DFSP to a fuel pier at the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor complex (Long Beach Pier 12), allowing fuels to be shipped or received to and form ocean-going vessels. DFSP pipelines also connect to pipelines of nearby refineries and the pipeline to DFSP Watson Station in the city of Carson, California.

  • This patch of coastal sage scrub is inhabited by California gnatcatchers and Palos Verdes blue butterflies. The endangered PV blue was thought extinct after Rancho Palos Verdes built a baseball park on top of prime PV blue habitat in 1987. The last colony in existence was rediscovered here in 1994.
