Likely the busiest area for railroad traffic in the state of Minnesota. Originally built at the convergence of the Northern Pacific to the north, Great Northern to the west, Chicago Burlington & Quincy to the south, and Omaha Road (CMO) to the east, Westminster additionally served traffic from an additional five railroads at its peak- Chicago Great Western, Rock Island, Soo Line. Milwaukee Road, and Minnesota Transfer railroads, for transfer service or access to St. Paul Union Depot.

Following the consolidation of the industry through the last decades of the 20th century, today the junction links the BNSF (ex-GN/ ex-NP/ex-CBQ), Union Pacific (ex-CNW, nee-CMO), and Canadian Pacific (ex-Soo Line) railroads, with the Minnesota Commercial and short line Twin Cities & Western running via trackage rights.
