Saint Mary’s College High School will mark two significant anniversaries during the 2007-2008 school year. The school was founded 145 years ago in San Francisco as the high school department of Saint Mary’s College and has been located at its Berkeley campus at Peralta Park for the past 80 years.

The oldest of the De La Salle Christian Brothers’ schools on the West Coast, the high school and college shared campuses in San Francisco and Oakland until separating to larger facilities in Berkeley in 1927 and Moraga in 1928, respectively.

The peak enrollment recorded was in 1965-66, at which time Peralta Park was home to 791 boys who were day or boarding students: 611 in the high school and 180 in the grammar school – 161 more students than today’s allowed maximum of 630. The grammar school closed and moved to Napa in 1969, and in 1995, the high school became coeducational.

Comments

  • St. Mary's was formerly an all-guys school. My brother went there in the 80's.
  • Brian's right - i went to saint mary's - it was all boys until 1995
  • I fixed the description with a little history lesson. As an Class of 1975 alum, the school is too precious to disgrace with inaccurate information. Live on Bells of St. Marys....HALE!
